I think we all need to be a little honest when it comes to modern kids’ toys. While, yes, they do a great job entertaining your child, they can be a bit of sensory overload. It’s all fun and games until you go to check on your child in the middle of the night and accidentally step on the beloved toy that turns their room into the newest disco in the neighborhood. This is why I’m all about finding toy stores stocked with the best selection of products that let your child use their imagination to power their play. If you’ve been looking for a great toy store for your family, I can’t wait to introduce you to one of the best in the area: Captain Little. This iconic Olympia spot contains amazing toys that won’t leave you reaching for the migraine medicine.
About Captain Little
The space where Captain Little now resides lived many rich lives before it became the staple we know and love. It was an oyster house, a daycare, a clothing shop, and then a toy store in 2000. Wind Up Here spent years serving as a destination for kiddos all across the Pacific Northwest.
When the shop decided to sell in 2014, Alana Carr and Michael Tempke jumped at the opportunity to own a bit of history. They gave the shop a mascot–a sailing mouse–and named it Captain Little to honor the building’s origins. Nearly a decade later, the shop remains a favorite amongst Olympia residents. The premium selection and knowledgeable staff make it the best place to get the latest toys.
Products
Captain Little prides itself on carrying one of the largest toy selections in Washington. When you step into the bright space, you’ll be greeted by display after dazzling display. The staff works to curate the selection so you always have the latest products at your fingertips.
Little architects will love the building blocks by Tegu, while budding scientists will adore the latest offerings from brands such as YellowScope. They have many great books from authors such as Emily Winfield Martin and Nikki McClue. You can also find imaginative toys from Maileg and Janod and classic trains from Brio.
Specialty
The shop takes the time to find local brands to support different artists around the PNW. You can purchase music from Erica Freas, a singer from right here in Olympia, or get some new clothing from Little Lark, an adorable Portland kids’ clothes creator. They sell exciting games from the Olympia Heart of the Deericorn and adorable cloth crowns from the nearby brand Fuzzy Head Bonnets. They’re the ideal shop when it comes to buying locally!
